Featured Album this Week (11/28/10): “Amateur” by Kat Boelskov

An individual by the name of Kat Boelskov send me an e-mail last week, letting me know that she really enjoyed my free e-book. Flattered (doesn’t take much, huh?), I immediately visited her website to take a listen. Next thing I knew, it was an hour later and I had no idea where the time went.

“Amateur” is an album that starts off with high energy and tension, then gets all ambient and meaningful on you. I hear a TON of influences scattered about this album, and I really love how she blends electronica, jazz, rock, and (sometimes) operatic vocals. On Kat’s website, she actually lists KT Tunstall (last week’s featured artist) as one of her influences, which I thought was a pretty odd coincidence.

Despite having no musical training, Kat was able to write, record, mix, and produce this album all on her own. As a result, the lyrics are deeply personal, which is definitely cool, and not seen often enough.

You can download Kat’s album from her Bandcamp page (name your own price), or purchase a physical CD directly from the woman herself.
