Featured Album this Week (12/20/10): “One Way Streets” by Call Before You Dig

Call Before You Dig - One Way Streets

AHH! Canadians have invaded Tight Mix! :)

Call Before You Dig is an uber-cool-three-piece-group out of Vancouver, BC, and man, their latest album “One Way Streets” is a trip for sure. I’ve really become a sucker for jangly guitars and wavering, avant-garde vocals, and this album hands that to me on a silver plate. I’m trying to picture a less abrasive Velvet Underground, because this is probably what it would sound like.

I hear Cold War Kids all over the vocal melodies during the second track, “Lublin” and I must admit that I love the hell out of it. Easily my favorite track on the entire album, “Lublin” is upbeat and danceable by any standard.

The third song drags a bit, but if I hadn’t seen TRON moments before listening, I probably would have had more patience for it. Daft Punk gets me all riled up… ;)

The rest of the album flows nicely, and I even hear some John Frusciante influences?? Call me crazy, but very well done, boys.

You can download the entire 14-song album from their Bandcamp page, for whatever price you feel is fair (if any). These guys don’t have a website (sigh), just a MySpace (bigger sigh), but if you give them some cash for the album maybe they’ll do something smart with it, like hire me to make them a website… :D

Okay, way too many smiley faces are in this review…kinda bad, but that’s gotta be a good sign for the band though, right?? Seriously, check these guys out. A hidden gem, indeed.
