Featured Album this Week (11/15/10): “Placed by the Gideons” by Wormburner

Wormburner is a straight-ahead rock band out of Hoboken, New Jersey, and Alec (their manager?) reached out to me via e-mail about their latest album, “Placed by the Gideons.” The first thing I did was check out their website, which looks great and (not surprisingly) is powered by the almighty WordPress platform.

Alec gave me a link to download the entire album from a file-sharing site, so I imported the entire thing into my iTunes, popped in some noise-canceling headphones, and loved what I heard.

The album starts out with a very indie rock vibe, not dissimilar to something like The Henry Clay People, but quickly makes the transition into straight-ahead rock n’ roll. As the album progressed, I heard more punk rock and pop influences. Guitars got simpler, vocals got catchier, and sweeping synths make a couple appearances. The synth intro to “Jersey Central (Power and Light!)” really stood out to me and was one of the things I remembered the most about the album. At times, lead singer Steve Henry’s voice reminded me of Tom Gabel, the lead for punk rock band Against Me!

You can purchase “Placed by the Gideons” directly from their label, Dive Records, or from iTunes if you prefer that route.

Great review Chris! I tried my hand at writing reviews for quite a while before we decided to switch focus on MicControl (right around the time we met, actually)… and I can say first hand that writing a short and sweet review such as this is not an easy accomplishment. I will certainly be checking out the band. Thanks!

Thanks Jon, I really appreciate that comment. I always struggle the most when I review music because it requires a completely different writing style than my typical blog posts. I feel like they often aren’t creative enough, but it’s nice to hear that at least one person besides me likes them haha.
