MySpace Re-Designs User and Musician Profiles

new-myspace-layout

After nearly a decade (if my memory serves me right), MySpace is has finally decided to re-design the layout and appearance of its user and musician profile pages. Good news, right? Sort of. They definitely look more organized and MUCH easier to navigate, which is a plus. The downside, however, is that the backend has been re-organized as well, so you basically have to re-learn where everything is, which is exactly what I was looking forward to this morning. Joy.

Aside from the new look and feel, MySpace is still pretty much exactly the same. I do like that you can make the page look halfway decent now without having to create crazy templates and hacks. It will save you tons of time and headaches (well, maybe not tons of headaches, as it is still MySpace we’re talking about here).

Andrew Dubber (@dubber) wrote a funny article about the new MySpace design called “Myspace…Now With Glitter” over @MusicThinkTank. it’s a great read, definitely go check that out too.

Any opinions about the new layout? I’m really not sure what to make of it yet, or if I should switch over some of my artists…what do you think? Speak up with a comment below.

Ill be completely honest, myspace just doesnt cut it anymore. The ability to engage with your fans through Myspace is still almost non-existent. These pages may look nice, and be able to compete with Sonic Bids as a nice looking EPK, but as far as using it to create a hub for fans… i just dont see that happening again. Maybe im wrong and they can make a comeback, but Myspace is social network 1.0 and we are well into the 2.0 phase…

I agree with Jon. It’s been a while I don’t really use myspace anymore. My contacts are elsewhere, on twitter and facebook, for example. The only thing positive is the clean design, I felt it was quite easy to manage my existing data, except the videos I put through the former bio box which I decided to remove instead of creating a new html box.

The problem is myspace is still spam oriented… I keep my profile if by any chance it’s visited, but I don’t expect to work on it anymore… And well, I put my URL website everywhere on it, that’s the main feature ;)

Some of what you guys said (in comments) I think is true:
    very tough to engage fans
    very spammy
    not actually social

But if you don’t have a myspace I think you’re kidding yourself. I’ve played lots of shows in Boston, Cambridge, Brooklyn, NYC and all the venues ask for your myspace. They don’t care about the worse sounding mp3 player!! They want a format they are familiar with and can thus evaluate whether or not you are a good fit for their club.
Also, I’ve had a lot of messages sent to my myspace from licensing companies etc. Honestly, more so than any other profile I have online.

So, I think myspace is like: set it up, make it look good, put good music on it, check it once in a while and move on! You need to have one, but it’s not going to build you a fanbase from scratch!

As to the new profiles, I don’t like them haha. Maybe I will soon. They could have at least upgraded their player though my goodness!!!!

I’m looking for new templates. Thanks for posting this one. I can switch to different templates every now and then although MySpace is not that big anymore compared to Facebook and Twitter.
