Gimel “Young Guru” Keaton is an incredible producer in the hip-hop/R&B world who has worked on a bunch of huge records from world-renown artists like Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Mariah Carey. This dude has a seriously level head on his shoulders, and gives one of the best explanations of the current situation that many artists are facing in the recording industry today.

This video is so on point that I had to pass it along to you guys. Young Guru’s speech is downright inspiring for anybody thinking about taking the independent route in the music industry.

Do you agree with what he has to say? Are record labels basically just banks handing out loans? I think so, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

absolutely! i make my own records ,my own videos and shoot my own pictures for the art.
I sell it through a major distributor that takes 20%. A major label wants 70%. I hire an indi PR team that believe in what i am doing. You got to pay to get to radio via some kind of “professional”, that can give no guarantee if your song will be played on not..but they are happy to take your money. I say do it yourself, go in a play for them. The artist has the power if he or she can stand up and do it themselves….just my opinion.
